AN INTRODUCTION

Established in 1982 and situated at Hermitage "on a spur of ever green pines and ferns" on the eastern slope of Darjeeling town, a stone's throw distance from Raj Bhawan on the Mall, Vidya Vikash Academy was started with just 105 students and a staff of five teachers for classes 3 to 7. Year by year it started getting bigger and better. Eventualy in 1985 it was recognised by the Government of West Bengal and later the same year it was granted affiliation for the ICSE Examinations by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, a premier Educational Board of India in New Delhi.

The first batch of six students wrote their Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examinations in March 1986 with excellent results. The number of candidates for the ICSE increased each year with a steady 100% success rate.

The students are accommodated in three large concrete buildings and the entire campus is surrounded by a "Green Belt" of trees as well as growth of other perennial plants thus ensuring a pollution free, healthy and congenial environment conducive for the "development of knowledge" worthy of the name VIDYA VIKASH ACADEMY.

In 1999 the school was upgraded to ISC (+2) level offering the senior students a choice of three streams : Science, Commerce and Humanities. Resultwise the ISC batch of students have successfully emulated their ISCE counterparts.

The ISC stream can boast of offering BIO-TECHNOLOGY as a subject which makes Vidya Vikash Academy the ONLY SCHOOL in the WHOLE OF NORTH BENGAL to do so.

The education needs of the 1000 odd students in classes 3 to 12 are looked after by a competent and experienced faculty of more than fifty teachers and backed up by another dozen of supervisory staff in the office. Supporting this set up so adequately is the team of honest and loyal maintenance and security staff who are always at the beck and call of the School.

Besides the student's primary task of doing well in Academics, great emphasis is laid on co-curricular activities like games and sports, music and drama, elocution, quiz and debates. Moreover the senior students are obliged to put in sufficient number of hours of hard work in social and community service and to maintain an eco-friendly campus.

Vidya Vikash Academy had already carved a niche for itself in the educational establishment of the town. Motivated by a sense of CARITAS (Universal Love) and PROGRESS, the school is all set for a brighter future.

    The truth of this saying has been exemplified by the vision of the founders of Vidya Vikash Academy who have given their best to make the school into what it is today.

    However, it is just a beginning and the journey is a long and arduous one. Armed with courage and Perseverance and with the good will, love and best wishes of students and staff alike together with the Fellowship of all concerned, we hope to make Vidya Vikash academy serve the greater cause and interest of Humanity.

    "A Journey of a Thousand Miles begins with the First Step."

    VVA took her first step on the 27th of March 1982 with a very small group of 105 students. Now after 30 "short" years she is running and not walking.

    Many important milestones have been crossed in that Journey and now with more than 1000 students she has carved a niche for herself in the Educational Map of the Hills.

SMART CLASS
The Best Quality Learning Environment

All the class rooms from 2012 have become Smart Classrooms.

Smart class is an effective way of teaching method. It is entirely different from the old way of teaching by writing on black boards. In this new era of technology smart class is a step towards development.

Here projectors or screens are raised where students can visualize and learn almost everything . They get a chance to see the experiments, incidents etc. they can hear,see and learn through smart class. It is an interesting method of learning and students get a chance to escape from the boredom of sleepy classes.
